Eligibility Details

A. Essential for Medical Candidates (General Discipline - Professor)

  • Medical Qualification: Included in the I or II schedule or part II of the third schedule to the Indian Medical Council Act of 1956.
  • Qualifying Degree: A Postgraduate qualification MD or MS recognized under the IMC Act, #1956 or by the NMC in the concerned department.
  • Experience: Fourteen years teaching experience obtained after obtaining the qualifying degree in an NMC recognized department.

B. Essential for Super-Speciality Disciplines (Professor)

  • Qualifying Degree: D.M. or M.Ch recognized under the IMC Act, #1956 or by the NMC in the concerned department.
  • Experience for 02/05 years course qualifying degree: Twelve years teaching experience after obtaining the qualifying degree.
  • Experience for 03/06 Years Course qualifying degree: Eleven years experience.

C. Essential for Non-Medical Candidates* (Professor)

  • Qualification: Postgraduate qualification (Master degree in discipline/allied subject) AND a Doctorate degree from a recognized University.
  • Experience: Fourteen years teaching and/or research experience after obtaining the Doctorate degree.

Eligibility for Other Posts (General Discipline)

  • Additional Professor: Same as Professor (Medical General Discipline) + Ten years teaching experience. (Non-Medical: Ten years teaching/research experience post Doctorate).
  • Associate Professor: Same as Professor (Medical General Discipline) + Six years teaching experience. (Non-Medical: Six years teaching/research experience post Doctorate).
  • Assistant Professor: Same as Professor (Medical General Discipline) + Three years teaching experience. (Non-Medical: Six years teaching/research experience post Doctorate).

DNB Equivalence Requirements

Applicants holding DNB/Dr NB must provide documentary evidence of equivalence with MD/MS/DM/M.Ch as per NMC notification dated 30.06.2025. Equivalence requires either DNB/Dr NB training in an institution recognized by NBE with an attached hospital or in a hospital with 500+ beds, OR one year of senior residency in an NMC recognized teaching institution after passing DNB/Dr NB (if training was in a hospital with less than 500 beds).

Educational Qualifications for Non-Medical Candidates (Biochemistry, Microbiology, Pharmacology): Master of Science in Medical Biochemistry/Microbiology/Pharmacology with Doctor of Philosophy in the respective subject.

Important Conditions

  • The number of vacancies is subject to variation by the Executive Director, AIIMS Madurai.
  • Horizontal Reservation of 4% for Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD) is applicable.
  • EWS candidates can apply as UR, but will not receive age/fee relaxation applicable to EWS.
  • Initial place of posting will be temporary at Government Medical College, Ramanathapuram, Tamil Nadu, subject to transfer based on AIIMS Madurai project progress.
  • Teaching/Research Experience is considered only after obtaining essential qualifications. Experience certificates must detail exact dates, nature (teaching/research), and be issued by the Head(s) of the recognized organization (Medical: MCI/NMC, Dental: DCI, Non-medical: UGC).
  • Relaxation of one-year experience for SC/ST candidates is available per rules.
  • The posts carry usual allowances as admissible to Central Government Employees, including NPA for medical qualifications, based on 7th CPC Pay Matrix (Level 14-A for Professor down to Level 12 for Assistant Professor).
  • Upper Age Limits (as of 24.11.2025): Professor/Additional Professor: Not Exceeding 58 years; Associate/Assistant Professor: Not exceeding 50 years.
  • Age relaxation applies as per Govt. of India rules for OBC (3 years), SC/ST (5 years), PwBD (5 years), and Government Servants (3 years + DoPT guidelines). No age relaxation for SC/ST/OBC/EWS candidates applying under UR category.
  • No TA/DA will be paid for attending the Personal Interview.
  • Appointees are governed by the National Pension System (NPS).
  • Period of probation for faculty post(s) is two years. Private practice is prohibited during employment.

Mode of Selection

Selection will be based on shortlisting criteria (educational qualification, experience, caste/category) followed by an Interview. A screening test may be conducted if the number of applications is large. Candidates must score minimum qualifying marks (suitability standard) in the interview for empanelment.
